Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 4 to 6. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while reading.

A Battle is a full day tournament or game, like the College Bowl, in which student teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list. All the questions begin with, In what book did? Students respond with the appropriate book title and author.

The Regional Battle is held in the spring. The day begins with students being assigned to a team (they do not compete as a school team) and given a team mascot. The students then work together as a team for the entire day. They compete against other teams for five rounds of competition. At the end of the morning, points are totaled and the two teams with the most points are invited to a Grand Battle after lunch.

A student participates on our school team by:· signing up to join the Battle of the Books team in the fall
· agreeing to read at least 20 books from the list of approximately 30 books
· completing a one page summary sheet for each book read
· attending designated Battle of the Book club meetings (typically held Fridays during school hours)
· competing in the Regional Battle in the spring.

Books are available to all students in our school library and the public library. Many teachers also have copies in their class and most books have Accelerated Reader tests.

Children who participate in Battle of the Books gain knowledge and enjoyment from reading good books, sharing them with friends, parents and teachers and enjoying a competition where the focus is on the love of good literature.
