Fog Delay Information

Delayed Openings (2 Hours)

Fog delays will be announced on most local radio and television stations by 7:00 a.m. Also, you may access the Kern County Superintendent of School's website for delays.  Please do not call the school office.

During the fog season, Almondale, American, Centennial, Del Rio, Independence, Patriot, Rosedale North, Freedom Middle School, and Rosedale Middle School may have delayed starts for 2 hours.

On foggy days our transportation staff uses a visibility standard of 300 feet before the buses are allowed to operate.  The California Vehicle Code requires school districts to adopt procedures that limit the operation of school buses when visibility on the roadway is reduced to 200 feet or less (Vehicle Code 34501.6).  We have added 100 feet to this standard to ensure the safety for your children.  Before the buses are allowed to leave at 6:50 a.m., the transportation supervisor has traveled throughout the district ensuring the 300-foot standard is in effect.

  • Once a bus route has been started, it is the specific responsibility of the driver to determine whether or not conditions will permit continued safe operation of the assigned route.

  • If, in the opinion of the driver, conditions are so hazardous that safe operation of the bus route is not possible, the driver shall pull safely off the roadway, turn all lights off, and notify by 2-way radio the Maintenance and Operations Manager.  If conditions improve, the drivers may then continue their assigned route.
